Stylist one Men get Lagerfeld's masculine woman Fashion

For his own Lagerfeld Gallery, the German-born designer paraded a line of womenswear for spring-summer 2006 based on two favorite garments from his own wardrobe - the ubiquitous white cotton shirt and a greige jacket from menswear. Designer Karl Lagerfeld dabbled in a bit of menswear for women today to keep Paris fashion week from getting too syrupy - although he still pranced out enough frills and ruffles to go around.

He began with oversized white cotton shirts with long cotton ribbons banding the sleeves. They were worn with white cotton straight legged cotton trousers, or under boxy, greige men's-style jackets with broad, square shoulders.

Then there was the feminine side.

Tear-shaped cutouts appeared on the lapels of some jackets, on the sleeves and neckline of crisp belted dirndl dresses and down the bodice of a black silk dress with halter top.

At this part of the show, there was a mid-1960s feel - especially with a floral organza dress dotted with coin-sized, tutti-frutti coloured circles with jumbo spangles attached.

Elsewhere, young designer Stella Cadente paraded out bad biker girls dancing merrily around the catwalk in pastel pleated dresses.

The surprise of the morning was the womenswear line Vincent Darre designed for Emanuel Ungaro. After the dowdy cocktail wear he designed last season, Darre seems to have worked out a way to respect the brand while expressing his own point of view.

The collection was an invitation to tango. Form-fitting dresses in garden-party florals had giant ruffles at the hemline that bounced all the way down the runway. A curvy tailored jacket with Mao collar and sunburst seaming on the sides easily slipped over an organza skirt diagonally pleated into a side-swept effect.

This collection was most creative when new volumes were worked in. Ruffles were taken to the extreme, small and compact, or oversized and flowing, they completely devoured the top of a fishtail dress.

And if that weren't sexy enough, Darre even incorporated corsets into dresses abound with off-the-shoulder flounces and tiered ruffles down the skirt.

Not everything belonged on the dance floor here.

As though to give the eye a rest, on a few organdy dresses the ruffles were squared off and ironed flat, forming tiered panels down the front. There were serene dolman-sleeve jackets in petrol blue silk faille.

Singaporean Andrew Gn knows many women will not want to wear all of the frills and fuss seen during this Paris fashion week. His collection was crisp and clean - the way many working women like to dress.

Little suits in black and white with contrasting embroidered trim had beaded belts worked in.

Quite spectacular was a hip-length, black cotton pique jacket bordered in white with a white embroidered pineapple on each side of the bodice. It was worn over a matching skirt, traced with contrasting beads.

With his eye on summer, Gn had silhouettes softened to include sleeveless organdy smock tops splashed with Pucci-style prints belted over matching slim skirts.

I have to admit that I do like a good deal of what Browne is all about, and by that I mean his effort to keep the suit relevant. The crisp, close-fitting 1950s-1960s suit styles I've also long felt were a high point of men's suiting in the modern age, and in general, I admire tastefully anachronistic looks that feel fresh.

Still, there is going too far, and there is really going too far. I've always viewed Browne's signature style as costume-like, and his laundry list of details necessary to properly wear his (evidently uncomfortably tight) suit does little to challenge the idea that his look is anything less than a complete affectation.

Worse, it's an affectation of the most buffoonish kind: one that makes the wearer actually look less attractive.

Men's fashion should still retain at least some vague semblance of practicality, and of not being so vapidly affected -- lest one look like a clown. Additionally, a look so entirely contrived rarely stands the test of time, and is hardly usable for the vast majority out there.

Combine the old with the new, yes, yes, but don't do so if it looks cartoonish. That's the real thing we should be learning from Thom Browne.
